The following article, “Friends & Allies, Allied airmen shot down over western Europe in World War II, and the people on the ground who helped them, gather in New Orleans to give thanks and swap war stories”, appeared in the The Times-Picayune newspaper May 15, 2005 on the occasion of the 2005 AFEES reunion in New Orleans. It features the stories of Richard Smith, a B-17 bomber pilot who was shot down Dec. 30, 1943, and the family of Anne Brusselmans, whose family aided more than 130 Allied servicemen.
