Vernon L. Baldwin Jr
1919-2006
Vernon L. Baldwin, Jr. passed away July 19, 2006, in Waco. Visitation with the family will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at BrookView Funeral Home with Military Honors at 10:30. He was born Aug. 31, 1919, in Landsdale, Pa., to Vernon L. and Rachael R. (Randall) Baldwin. In 1937 he graduated from high school, and he joined the Army Air Corps in 1939. He was stationed at Hickam Field during the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7. His other tours of duty included Hawaii, Europe, Okinawa and England. He also piloted B-17’s for the 15th Army Air Corp. to North Italy, Austria and Yugoslavia. On Nov. 12, 1943, Vernon married Dorothy Berthold. In 1957, he retired from the U. S. Air Force, and then worked for the Waco Weather Bureau from 1961 until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the Central Texas Ceramic Club and the Woodway Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf, watching sports and playing with cats. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; sons, Jeff Baldwin and wife, Jan; Brett Baldwin and wife, Melinda; grandchildren, Brandee Baldwin of Leesburg, Va.; Josh Baldwin and wife, Katie of San Antoino, Texas; great-granddaughter, Lauren Baldwin; brother, Earl W. Baldwin of Silverdale, Pa.; sister, Jean Kalk of Florida and eleven nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Commemorative Air Force, P.O. Box 62000, Midland, TX 79711-2000.
