AFEES Book About AFEES

AFEES was responsible for making available in English two books on WWII escape and evasion.  It published AIR FORCES Escape and Evasion Society and distributed Stepping Stones to Freedom, Help to Allied Airmen in The Netherlands During World War II.  For further information on each, see below.

In 1992, Turner Publishing Company published Air Forces Escape and Evasion, a 128-page volume about AFEES, containing its history, biographical sketches of AFEES veterans, a roster of its members, and a great many of their personal escape and evasion stories. There is a wealth of photographs.  There are 51 “Personal Experience Stories,” some quite long, and 242 shorter accounts by “Air Forces Escape and Evasion Veterans.”

The book is out of print but copies may be available through inter-library loan programs or used book services.  As of May 2017, Barnes & Noble had seven copies.   In October 2022, Biblio.com had ten copies.  In 2017 the World Catalogue listed 12 libraries in the US plus two overseas that carry it:

The following is an index compiled in January 2017 of the names of airmen mentioned in the book, giving the page numbers where their names appear.  Rank may be included if it is mentioned. Note that the same person may be listed more than once.  (An index to evaders mentioned in the AFEES newsletters, which appears elsewhere on this website, is also worth checking.  Click here to go to it.)

2. Stepping Stones to Freedom, Help to Allied Airmen in The Netherlands During World War II by Bob de Graaf

  • stepping-stones-to-freedom-front-cover

This book by Bob de Graaf was originally published in Dutch as Schakels naar de vrijheid in 1995 by SDU Publishers of The Hague in cooperation with “The Escape” organization.  Members of “The Escape” felt strongly enough about its historical contents that they gathered financial support to have it translated and printed in English in 2003 for AFEES members.  AFEES paid the cost of handling and mailing the book to its members.  It was printed by Walsworth Publishing Company of Missouri.  The book is an invaluable source of information on the experiences of Allied airmen shot down over The Netherlands during WWII and the aid they received from Dutch citizens.  For that reason, AFEES had the book scanned and it is available on this website.  In addition, some copies may be available through used book companies such as https://www.abebooks.com/ or through inter-library loan services.  According to the World Catalogue, copies are available at six libraries in the US:

  •  Hoover Institution Library, Stanford University, Stanford, CA
  • U.S. Air Force Academy McDermott Library, USAF, CO
  • Watertown Regional Library, Watertown, SD
  • Hannibal Free Public Library, Hannibal, MO
  • Hammon Public Library, Hammon, IN
  • James B. Duke Library, Furman University, Greenville, SC

  1. Dear WeabMaster
I would like to get a copy of the page 82 for Berglind, Elmo H. (Bud) of the Air Forces Escape and Evasion book. I am making the history of my great uncle that was a french “resistant”, “helper” in Champagne France near Rheims, and that helped Elmo H. Berglind for 2 weeks in May 1944. I want to know the rest of the “Berling” trip in France.
    Thank you very much
    Best regards
